Teaching Experience
2013-2016
English curriculum
I designed and developed the curriculum, learning exercises, and UI for an online language-learning tool, which acts as a supplement to classroom instruction. This required applying instructional design and language-acquisition theories to facilitate effective learning. I needed to understand and incorporate the theories so that we could simulate the personalization, expertise, and adaptation that a teacher can provide a live class.
2000-2016
Training
I have trained employees under my supervision on work procedures and computer applications throughout my career. Part of managing a team involves developing relationships of trust, facilitating open communication, encouraging new ideas, and accepting honest feedback. I created instruction on office processes so that the information was available to everyone, instead of one person holding all of the knowledge. I believe in providing background information and cross-training so that employees have a broader understanding of how they fit in the organization as well as an appreciation for what others do.
2005-2009, 2011, 2013, 2016
Youth Classes
Instructing youth, ages 12-18.
I focus the instruction on student participation, using various methods of teaching, such as games, student instruction, role playing, electronic media, and problem-based learning. I believe the emphasis on providing a caring environment, developing personal relationships, and showing respect are critical to class success. I gave a high priority to preparation, honesty, and follow-through. I have learned much about the different cognitive- and social-development levels of the differing age groups and how to adapt to each.
1998-2004, 2010, 2012
Adult Classes
Taught various community women's classes which included emergency preparedness, humanitarian aid, family relations, community service, and personal refinement.
Sharing personal applications of the curriculum and promoting class participation was found to be most effective. Establishing an environment of trust, friendship and respect among class members was also essential.
